Boris Johnson will U-turn on scaling back HS2, George Osborne predicts - Today News Post Today News || UK News

George Osborne, the former UK chancellor, has predicted that Boris Johnson will U-turn on his decision to scrap the eastern leg of the High Speed 2 railway as he criticised the prime minister for lacking ambition.

In an interview with the Financial Times’ Payne’s Politics podcast, Osborne — who also chairs the Northern Powerhouse Partnership pressure group — criticised the government’s decision this week to scrap most of the eastern leg of HS2 from Birmingham to Leeds as “pretty disappointing”.

He said Johnson would probably be forced into supporting the line again at the next election under pressure from the Labour party, noting “it wouldn’t be the first time?.22edf960-5286-4138-9ac1-e1a49cdb76ce?.BelarusFebruary 2021 – AFP?.?the prime minister executed a U-turnBritain has already seen a plunge in new cases and deaths, an.”

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition, said on Friday that Labour would deliver the full HS2 project, as well as fully constructing a new northern high speed east-west rail line known as Northern Powerhouse Rail.
