George Osborne, the former UK chancellor, has predicted that Boris Johnson will U-turn on his decision to scrap the eastern leg of the High Speed 2 railway as he criticised the prime minister for lacking ambition.
In an interview with the Financial Times’ Payne’s Politics podcast, Osborne — who also chairs the Northern Powerhouse Partnership pressure group — criticised the government’s decision this week to scrap most of the eastern leg of HS2 from Birmingham to Leeds as “pretty disappointing”.
